An Arizona med spa that offers neurotoxins, fillers, or prescription lasers is delivering medical services. A.R.S. § 32-3232 lets only a health professional with prescribing authority administer, or supervise the administration of, prescription medications and devices for cosmetic purposes, and A.R.S. § 32-3233 requires certified laser technicians working under a licensed supervisor. The clinical side usually sits in a professional corporation owned by Arizona-licensed professionals, while the founder owns the MSO that runs the studio, brand, and front desk for a fixed fair-market-value fee. Foundry forms that MSO-PC for $15,000 one-time and matches an Arizona-licensed friendly PC owner for $3,000/mo.

Arizona's ownership and fee-splitting rules are on Arizona CPOM, and the CPOM 50-state guide compares Arizona with other states. For the general aesthetics build, start at the med spa MSO-PC hub. General information only, not legal advice. Foundry is not a law firm.

A.R.S. § 32-3233 sets the laser technician certificate: 40 hours of didactic training, supervised hands-on hours, and a set number of supervised procedures for each procedure type beyond hair removal. The supervising professional must be licensed and acting within scope. A.R.S. § 32-3231 defines the two supervision levels, and the Arizona laser rules require written protocols and registration of the devices.

Nurse practitioners and the medical director question

Arizona gives NPs full practice authority, so an NP can examine, prescribe, and inject within scope without a collaborating physician. That does not settle ownership. A medical director title on a lay-owned LLC is still not ownership of the clinical entity, and payers and buyers ask who owns the practice. Read physician PC owner vs medical director before you hire for the role.

Who can inject Botox in an Arizona med spa?

Physicians, PAs, and NPs within their scope, and RNs acting on a prescriber's order under the Arizona State Board of Nursing's advisory opinion on cosmetic injections. A.R.S. § 32-3232 limits administering or supervising prescription medications and devices for cosmetic purposes to health professionals with prescribing authority, and the prescriber must examine the patient before prescribing.

Do Arizona laser technicians need a certificate?

Yes. A.R.S. § 32-3233 requires laser technicians to hold a certificate from the Arizona Department of Health Services, with 40 hours of didactic training plus supervised hands-on training, and to work under a licensed health professional acting within scope.

Does the supervising professional have to be on site in an Arizona med spa?

It depends on the procedure. Under A.R.S. § 32-3231, direct supervision means the professional is present at the facility, and indirect supervision means the professional is readily reachable by telecommunication. Arizona's laser rules allow indirect supervision for laser hair removal and require direct supervision for other cosmetic laser procedures.
